The Global Boom and the Power of Rankings The bar industry is currently in a "Golden Age," where top bartenders travel the world like celebrities and popular venues see hours-long queues. The primary catalyst for this movement is "50 Best Bars," the industry's most prestigious ranking. Based on an evidence-based voting system by global experts, being ranked instantly transforms a venue into a global destination and its bartenders into international stars.

2025 Highlights for Japan In 2025, Japan's presence was undeniable. In Asia’s 50 Best Bars, six venues made the Top 50, including regional powerhouses like Yakoboku (Kumamoto) and Lamp Bar (Nara), alongside new entries like Bar Libre (Ikebukuro) and Punch Room Tokyo (Ginza). In the World’s 50 Best, Tokyo solidified its status with three bars in the Top 50—including newcomer The Bellwood (Shibuya)—and a total of five bars in the Top 100.

Industry Icons Two figures stand at the forefront of this success:

  • Hiroyasu Kayama (Bar BenFiddich, Shinjuku): A "farmer-bartender" who creates tailor-made cocktails using herbs and fruits from his own farm, embodying the "farm-to-glass" concept.

  • Shingo Gokan (SG Group): A legendary figure whose bars, including The SG Club (Shibuya), have appeared in the rankings a record-breaking 60 times across five countries.

The Significance of the Award As Shingo Gokan notes, the ranking has become a critical factor for business success, employee motivation, and brand value. Securing a spot on the list acts as a powerful engine, thrusting bars onto the global stage and attracting "bar lovers" and professional opportunities from every corner of the world.
